Building Information Modelling (BIM) and Quantity Estimation Internship
Create a coordinated BIM model and derive traceable quantities for a small building project.
A BIM-based civil learning pathway covering model setup, architectural/structural elements, information quality, coordination, schedules and transparent quantity estimation.
Program overview
Eligible branches: Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering and Management, Architecture and built-environment studies, Quantity surveying-related programs
Target learner level: Learners who can read basic building drawings and want an introduction to BIM coordination and estimation.
Prerequisites: Basic building drawing literacy and spatial reasoning · BIM software access or a compatible educational platform
Technologies and tools
BIM model setup · levels and grids · building elements · parameters · schedules · quantity takeoff · coordination and issue tracking
Practical assignments
- Model a small building zone from a defined drawing set
- Create schedules and trace quantities back to model elements
- Compare model quantities with a documented manual takeoff assumption
Capstone project
Develop a coordinated learning model and traceable quantity summary for a scoped building project.
Expected deliverables
- BIM model and view sheets
- Schedules and quantity summary
- Measurement assumptions and exclusions
- Coordination review notes
- Model handover presentation
Learning outcomes
- Build a structured model using levels, grids and element properties
- Create schedules and trace quantities to model elements
- Review coordination issues and document quantity assumptions
Week-by-week curriculum
The program follows a 13-week core pathway. Weeks 14–15 are optional advanced work when the project scope calls for it.
Weeks 1–2
Orientation, fundamentals and setup
- Orientation, BIM roles, model standards and project template setup
- Levels, grids, coordinates, views and building-information fundamentals
Weeks 3–5
Core concepts and guided learning
- Walls, floors, roofs, doors, windows and type/instance properties
- Structural framing, columns, foundations and model organization
- View templates, sheets, annotations and model documentation
Weeks 6–8
Intermediate concepts and practical exercises
- Schedules, material quantities, filters and parameter management
- Model coordination, linked files, issue tracking and change awareness
- Extract quantities and compare with drawing-based takeoff assumptions
Weeks 9–11
Advanced topics, specialist tools and project development
- LOD/LOI, naming conventions, model checks and coordination workflows
- Quantity classification, measurement rules, waste factors and traceability
- Develop a BIM/estimation capstone from a scoped building brief
Weeks 12–13
Capstone completion, testing, documentation and evaluation
- Complete coordinated model, views, schedules and quantity summary
- Check model completeness, assumptions, exclusions and schedule consistency
- Present coordination findings and a traceable estimate
Weeks 14–15 · Optional
Advanced extension and final presentation
- Add a design-change comparison or 4D/5D concept where suitable
- Refine model data and present the final BIM handover
Frequently asked questions
Is prior experience required?
The prerequisites listed on this page describe helpful preparation. The opening weeks include a guided refresher; learners should be ready to practise consistently and complete project work.
Are quantity estimates suitable for procurement or tendering?
No. The estimates are educational outputs and require independent professional review before any commercial, procurement or construction use.
